Men have unique needs when it comes to laser hair removal treatments. Dealing with unwanted hair does’t have to be embarrassing. At The Angel Laser Clinic we pride our selves on making our patients feel comfortable. We use only the best medical laser technology so we can deliver the best results.
The Cynosure Elite laser will permanently reduce the amount of unwanted hair. Periodic touch-ups maybe required in some cases because men continually produce testosterone which will stimulate hair growth.
Body hair develops all over a man at the onset of puberty, with hair growing fastest in the areas most sensitive to the production of testosterone. This explains why hair grows in the genital area before it does for example on the chest or under the arms.
Hair can appear pretty much anywhere on the body with the exception of the palms of the hands or soles of the feet. And with an ever-increasing focus on male grooming in magazines and television adverts, much of which features male models with hairless chests and backs, there is more interest in how to remove unwanted hair. This means that men of all ages, ethnicities and sexual orientations are trying to decide between shaving, waxing, electrolysis and laser hair removal.
Most men shave their faces before going to work and common problems include rashes, razor burn and in-growing hairs. Some will shave other areas too. Beyond shaving there are other options for the removal of unwanted body hair which include:
Waxing. This is popular on the chest, back, toes, knuckles and eyebrows. The drawbacks to waxing are that it’s pretty painful and the hair keeps coming back. This means a man will have to keep repeating the waxing every few weeks. Over time the roots will become weakened enabling the intervals between waxing sessions to lengthen.
With electrolysis, a needle transmits an electric charge to each hair follicle. As each follicle is treated individually, the process takes a long time, making it more suitable for small body areas like the eyebrows or upper lip. A man will also typically need between 15 and 30 sessions so it’s quite a time commitment when you factor in travel to a skill practitioner (who you’ll definitely need as this isn’t a simple procedure and can be dangerous).
Permanent laser hair removal is another treatment style that requires multiple sessions (usually 6-8) in order to achieve the best results. Ideal candidates are men with fair skin and coarse black hair as the laser targets pigment – so the more pigment in the hair follicle relative to the skin, the better.
The laser energy is targeted at the hair follicle, but for people with darker skins, the risk that the surrounding skin will absorb some of the energy is greater. These days there are also lasers which operate at a specific frequency designed to achieve permanent hair removal for dark skins. So the Nd:YAG laser may well be a great option for men wanting:
- Laser hair removal for Asian skin
- Laser hair removal for African skin
- Laser hair removal for tanned skin
- Laser hair removal for olive skin
At The Angel Laser Clinic in Islington, we treat people with lighter skin tones with the Alexandrite laser and people with darker skins with the Nd:YAG laser.
