Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN)

DPN Is a benign skin condition typically affecting dark skin individuals with family history of this condition. It tends to occur more in females than males and is usually genetically determined however it is also possible for their appearance to be triggered by UV either from sun or sun beds. Although it is believed that darker skin types don’t get affected by UV as much as lighter skin types, to help prevent excessive epidermal growth, it is advisable that darker skin types use sun protection too.

DPN pustules usually look like little dark bumps with different levels of elevation and size. They can sometimes resemble small Seborrheic Keratosis. They seem to start appearing in adolescence and gradually increase in size and number with age. With time, they can also alter slightly in appearance especially with repeated sun exposure and friction to look a bit like skin tags.

DPNs tend to form on the upper face, but can be found on any area of the face, neck, chest and back. They are not medically concerning as they are not a premalignant condition but are often treated for cosmetic reasons especially when there are many present on the face and neck.

In The Angel Laser Clinic we use Advanced cosmetic procedures using electrolysis to precisely treat undesired lessons. Small probe is used to carefully dehydrate raised blemishes. This is a minimally invasive procedure providing very good results.
